Carbon monoxide inhalation is believed to be the cause of death of the former Yankees’ son in Costa Rica

QCOSTARICA — Judicial authorities indicate that the death of Miller Gardner, son of former New York Yankees player Brett Gardner, is believed to be by carbon monoxide inhalation.

The 14-year-old boy, who was enjoying a vacation with his family in Manuel Antonio, Quepos, fell ill and was found dead in his hotel room on Friday, March 21.

The director of the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ), Randall Zúñiga, explained that tests conducted in the young man’s bedroom revealed alarming levels of this gas, reaching up to 600 parts per million, when the safe level should be zero.

One of the main theories is that carbon monoxide may have leaked from a nearby engine room into the room where the young man was sleeping. However, the results of forensic toxicology tests are still awaited to definitively confirm the cause of death.

Also investigating the death is Costa Rica’s Ministry of Health. An April 4 statement by Health Minister Mary Munive Angermuller, who did not specifically name Miller or the resort the family was staying at, said the Health would “also” be investigating what took place at a “hotel in Manuel Antonio.”
