Billboards have clear “electoral purposes”

QCOSTARICA — In a little over a year, next February, Costa Ricans will go to the polls for elect a new President and Legislative Assembly. And while the campaigns for the 2026 elections have officially begun, there are signs that the mudslinging has.

Examples are of two billboards calling for the resignation of figures of the Supreme Power, with images of Rodrigo Arias, president of the Legislative Assembly; Orlando Aguirre, president of the Supreme Court of Justice; Carlo Díaz, attorney general; and the Comptroller General, Marta Acosta.

At the moment, no one has claimed responsibility for the publication.

A possible source of their publication is Casa Presidencial (Government House), though they have been quiet at this point, has made public repeatedly that both the Legislative Assembly and the Judicial Power “have hindered their work”.

“It is a clear attack against figures who antagonize the Government. It seems like an electoral campaign. Who pays for that? That costs a lot of money. Where did the funds come from? It would be very serious if the resources are public,” declared Vanessa Castro, legislator of the Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC)

Political scientist Daniel Calvo assured on social networks that both messages have an electoral intention and the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) must investigate the issue.

“This type of messages, which obey electoral logic, must be controlled. The most dangerous thing is to attack the institutionality. It not only attacks parties, but the system itself, that is why it is necessary to know who is behind it,” he declared.

Independent legislator, Kattia Cambronero, said: “We will have to see who is behind this. We will investigate. The strange thing is that no one is taking responsibility for this giant poster. This type of message has authoritarian overtones. Nothing like it has ever been seen before. Freedom of expression is not a way of delegitimizing democracy. It is an intentional campaign, it is a communication strategy.”
