QCOSTARICA — The Barva Volcano Sector of Braulio Carrillo National Park has temporarily closed its doors from March 20 to April 25, 2025, due to a shortage of drinking water in the area.
This was announced by the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC), which stated that the measure seeks to guarantee the safety of both visitors and park staff.
“Considering the severe decrease in water availability caused by the dry season, and in order to ensure the safety of staff members, Red Cross personnel working in the cafeteria, store, and parking lot, and visitors to the sector, it has been decided to implement a total closure,” SINAC said in a statement.

The Braulio Carrillo National Park administration explained that, although it has rained in some nearby areas, this does not mean that the water sources within the park have been recharged.
For the springs to have water, it requires rain in the higher reaches of the volcano.
Currently, the water that infiltrates the Barva Volcano takes approximately six months to reach communities like Alajuela, the park administration explained.
The park has a storage capacity of 27,000 liters in tanks, but with the natural supply depleted and road conditions preventing tanker trucks from reaching the area, it is not feasible to maintain operations in the Barva sector.
Meanwhile, the Quebrada González Sector of Braulio Carrillo National Park will remain open to visitors.

Authorities assured that they are working to mitigate the effects of the situation and will provide information about a possible reopening as conditions are monitored.
“We will communicate the reopening in due course… We hope for your understanding regarding the closure measures in favor of the safety and basic needs of tourists and personnel stationed in the Barva Volcano sector of the PNBC,” concluded SINAC.
