One of the most interesting elements of new tech is that we can never entirely predict how it will get used. Even the Internet itself started out as simply an academic file-sharing platform, evolving in leaps and bounds over time to become what we know now. On that note, here are some of the ways that modern tech is being applied in unexpected ways.
Entertainment
Finding new ways to present and consume media is the endless task of entertainment companies, and the massive amount of funding behind the industry as a whole has pushed technology onwards. Things like VR and AR have been brought to life by visual media like TV and movies, and sensors and real-time apps have been given a major push forward within sports.

The Internet as an entity has also pushed on, and entertainment has once again played a role, specifically with online casinos. That’s because developers made a united push to switch to HTML5 as a standard, a web-integrated framework that is far more friendly to mobile platforms than the old Flash standard.
Agriculture
There has also recently been a great deal of interest in the use of sophisticated cameras to help manage and boost agricultural work. The issue has long been that, regardless of the amount of manpower involved, monitoring such vast areas with any kind of regularity and accuracy has been impossible.
Now, thanks to advances in both drone technology and AI, farmers are able to monitor vast numbers of crops almost automatically. Take the case of AgriSmart in Pakistan, a company using an array of high-tech drones fitted with a range of sensors that feedback into an AI algorithm to automatically spot issues with crop health, helping with both yield and ecological factors.
Environment
The environment industry has come into its own over the last few decades, and as with agriculture, many of the difficulties this industry faces as a whole come down to scale. Environmental issues are very often global in scale, so collecting data and building models for climate or weather patterns has always been a challenge. Again, though, AI is coming to the rescue.

Already we are seeing AI software packages like Persefoni used by companies to track carbon emissions, and software like Atmo that can accurately read and predict weather patterns based on previous data. While there are some concerns that powering AI itself may contribute to environmental issues, it is nevertheless being used by companies for everything from solar farm positioning to pollution mapping and many other areas that will prove critical in the coming years.
