American man only suspect in femicide of his wife, Tamara Centeno

QCOSTARICA — Tamara Centendo was reported missing on Thursday. On Friday, the following day, the 20-year-old girl, originally from San Ramón, Alajuela, was found dead on a street with difficult access in La Granja de Palmares, inside a black bag.

Shortly after, the Organismo de Investigacion Judicial (OIJ) – Judicial Agency – arrested the only suspect in the case, the young girl’s husband, a 60-year old American man, identified by his last name, Moriondo.

Tamara Centeno was beaten and suffocated, according to the autopsy

He was detained at the San Ramón Hospital where he was taken by the Red Cross, where he was treated for a self-inflicted injury.

An autopsy was performed on Saturday. According to Rándall Zúñiga, director of the OIJ, the autopsy revealed that Centeno died of asphyxiation. In addition, she had bruises on different parts of her body.

The young woman was four months pregnant and her relatives believe that this could have been the reason that led her husband to end her life.

Monday afternoon, the Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that Tamara Centeno’s husband must serve one year of preventive detention as a suspect in the femicide.

“The Deputy Prosecutor’s Office of San Ramón obtained a one-year preventive detention order against a man with the surname Moriondo, suspected of committing a crime of femicide, against Tamara Centeno Murillo. The precautionary measure was notified by the Criminal Court of the area, today (Monday).

“The investigation against the accused began on January 23, after the mother of the victim filed a complaint for her disappearance. After this alert, the Prosecutor’s Office ordered the arrest of the suspect, while a series of proceedings were carried out,” indicated the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
