Airbnb bans security cameras in rentals

QCOSTARICA — Airbnb has implemented a new policy prohibiting the use of indoor cameras in host properties. Hosts were permitted to have cameras in shared areas, but they were not allowed in private spaces such as bedrooms and bathrooms.

It was expected that hosts would disclose the presence of any cameras in their rental, although this wasn’t always the case. The company states these new guidelines were developed “in consultation with our guests, hosts, and privacy experts”.

Hosts must also disclose any outdoor cameras (that can’t point indoors or be in areas with a “greater expectation of privacy” — ie showers and saunas).

The new rules kick in on April 30 to allow Hosts time to come into compliance.

“Our goal was to create new, clear rules that provide our community with greater clarity about what to expect on Airbnb. These changes were made in consultation with our guests, Hosts and privacy experts, and we’ll continue to seek feedback to help ensure our policies work for our global community,” states Airbnb’s Head of Community Policy and Partnerships, Juniper Downs at Airbnb.com

Hosts who do not comply with the new policies may have their properties removed from the Airbnb marketplace for short- and long-term homestays and experiences and could potentially have their account suspended.

Many property owners install cameras on their rental properties primarily for security reasons, wanting to ensure their property is not damaged or stolen by guests.
