13 Coopeservidores branches ordered closed

QCOSTARICA — The administration of the resolution of Coopeservidores R.L. (known as CS Ahorro y Crédito), agreed to the definitive closure of 13 branches starting this week.

According to a statement issued by the resolution, the branches in Liberia, Santa Cruz, Limón, Guápiles, Desamparados, Plaza Víquez, Cartago, Moravia, Metropolitana (located in San José), Heredia, El Roble, Alajuela and San Ramón, will be closed permanently starting Monday, July 29, 2024. These branches will continue to operate their normal hours today, Friday, July 25, 2024 and Saturday, July 27, 2024.

On Monday, July 29, 2024, the only Coopeservidores branches which will remain in operation will be Pérez Zeledón, Central Offices (325 meters north of the National Children’s Hospital) and Rohrmoser.

Marco Hernández, the Coopeservidores’ resolution officer, explained that of the 617 workers who had an employment contract at the time of the intervention, 262 have been terminated and 355 remain active. He was emphatic that the cessation of operations of these branches is part of the orderly closure of the resolution process.

This implies that clients in the area who need to make over-the-counter transactions at Coopeservidores will have to do so only at the remaining branches open to the public or consult through the channels enabled to pay the credits on the website www.ahorroycredito.cr.

The Consejo Nacional de Supervisión del Sistema Financiero (Conassif)  – regulatory entity of financial systems –  ordered the intervention of the cooperative on May 13, 2024, given stability and solvency risks, and the recommendation of the intervention officer to start the resolution process for a period of up to one year.

The resolution would allow the rescue of “a set of valuable and desirable assets, which would be excluded from a solvent financial entity, which must assume all the deposits and guaranteed loans, which would serve to make payments to creditors, in a relatively short period, which is estimated not to exceed two months.”

Currently, the Deputy Prosecutor’s Office for Probity, Transparency and Anti-Corruption has opened a file to investigate the actions of Conassif itself and the General Superintendence of Financial Entities (Sugef) for the case of Coopeservidores for the alleged crime of breach of duties.
