The Costa Rica Free of Drilling (CRLP) movement presented a document with proposals to transform the country’s energy and mobility model. The text is intended as a reference guide for presidential and legislative candidates in developing their government plans.
Country Vision
Ahead of the 2026 national elections, CRLP prepared the document “Country Vision: The Mobility and Energy Model Costa Rica Needs,” with concrete and viable proposals to advance decarbonization, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and accelerate a just transition. The text was developed through a rigorous co-creation process with energy, mobility, and sustainability specialists and presents a comprehensive vision that combines technical solutions with a long-term political commitment.
“This document is the starting point for a national conversation that must go beyond electoral cycles. We are not talking about aspirational ideas, but rather strategic decisions for a country that already has the conditions to lead the energy transition in the region. Achieving renewable energy independence is key to our country’s competitiveness and resilience, even more so in the current geopolitical context,” said Carolina Sánchez, CRLP spokesperson.
The proposal includes actions for the electrification of public and private transportation; the creation of walkable and connected cities; the promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency; institutional and regulatory strengthening; sustainable financing and innovation; and better use of open data for decision-making. Added to this are lines of action in urban planning, territorial governance, and citizen participation.
Urgent need
“The transformation of our energy matrix and our transportation systems is not only possible, but urgent. We are falling behind in the face of a global reality that demands immediate action and courageous leadership. We can act now with vision and responsibility, and that is our call to the candidates: to integrate this vision into their political proposals and turn it into a roadmap for the country’s sustainable development,” added Daniela Sánchez, President of the Youth and Climate Change Network, one of the organizations promoting the text.
With the publication of the document, CRLP is holding a process of meetings with presidential and provincial candidates, with the aim of ensuring that their proposals inform the construction of their programs and gather input that enriches the country’s vision.
