Elías Alvarado is Designated “Marshal Of Costa Rica” in the Hispanic American State Parade of New Jersey ⋆ The Costa Rica News

Elías Alvarado, a Costa Rican journalist based in the United States, announced on social media that he was designated “Marshal of Costa Rica” in the Hispanic American State Parade, which will take place this Sunday in New Jersey.

Additionally, on Sunday, October 12, he will be part of the Costa Rican delegation attending the Hispanic American State Parade in New York, where he will accompany the Zarcero Municipal Band. In an interview, the Telenoticias journalist said he was surprised by the designation for the parade in New Jersey, a city home to a significant Costa Rican community.

Data for 2024 indicate approximately 18,000 Costa Ricans registered at the consulate in that state, although it is estimated that the number could be much higher if more compatriots came to register to vote.

Alvarado stated that the invitation arrived days ago. This came after a compatriot submitted her name for consideration by those in charge of the parade, without his knowledge, he acknowledged.

Elías Alvarado’s Reaction

“I want to be as sincere as possible and with great humility: that a person, a Costa Rican, is nominated and appointed fills me with great pride. It takes me by surprise, and it’s nice because it’s not something you go looking for. Personally, I’m not looking for any kind of recognition or anything like that.

“I still believe I’ve only done my job. I don’t think I’ve done anything extraordinary or out of the ordinary. But as Costa Ricans abroad, we greatly value the opportunity to be heard today, for people to know that we really exist and that we contribute through honest and hard work to this country, and to elevate Costa Rica,” he commented.

After this parade, a special cultural event will be held on the 11th with the Costa Rican community in New Jersey. This event is being organized by him and Arturo Barahona, and both days will feature the Zarcero Communal Band, which is on an international tour called Pura Vida.

And the next day, the big event will take place in New York, where up to 3 million visitors are expected on Fifth Avenue. There, he will make the tour in a larger than traditional float.

“Let them consider Costa Rica for both parades. I think it should fill us with great pride, even though we are small compared to other Latin American countries. This is appreciated, and the contribution the Costa Rican community makes here is evident,” he said. Elías Alvarado has been with Telenoticias for five years: first as a contributor, and six months later, he was hired as part of the newscast’s staff.
