Costa Rican Social Security Issues Urgent Call For Blood Donations ⋆ The Costa Rica News

The general hospitals of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) are facing a critical shortage of blood supplies, so they are calling on the public to come forward and donate this vital liquid. The director of the Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia Hospital, Tania Jiménez Umaña, issued an urgent call for the public’s solidarity to continue saving lives.

“The hospital is experiencing a critical blood shortage, which puts the care of patients in elective surgeries, emergencies, and transplants at risk. Your support is vital to guarantee the continuity of hospital care,” said Jiménez Umaña.

In the donation process, a single donor can help up to three people at a time, since four types of components are extracted from each bag of donated blood: red blood cells, plasma, platelets, and cryoprecipitates (a frozen blood product). These can be used to treat patients in emergencies, surgeries, chronic treatments, multiple trauma, cancer, transplants, burns, among others.

Donation Requirements:

Be between 18 and 65 years old.

Be in good health.

Weigh more than 52 kilos and be 1.5 m tall or taller.

Carry a valid ID card, residency card, or official identification.

Have not consumed alcohol in the last 24 hours.

Be well hydrated.

Have not had any type of surgery or gastroscopy, tattoo, or piercing in the last six months.

If you are a woman, you must not be pregnant or breastfeeding.

Eat a light breakfast: fruit, crackers, bread, jams or jellies, coffee or tea without milk.

Do not consume fats or dairy products.

If you eat something heavy, you must wait two to three hours after eating before donating.

You must not fast.
