Recommendations in mind for the 2025 romeria

Q COSTARICA — With the arrival of August 2, the date on which thousands of people will mobilize toward the Basilica of the Angels in Cartago, for the annual romeria (pilgrimage), the College of Pharmacists of Costa Rica (ColFar) launched a series of tips to avoid health complications.

When participating in this pilgrimage, it is recommended to adopt preventive measures regarding hydration, sun protection, nutrition, correct use of medications, and specific health conditions, according to ColFar.

Among the main recommendations is the importance of staying hydrated by carrying between two and three liters of water per person, drinking it in small amounts every 15 to 20 minutes, and supplementing with oral fluids to replenish salts and electrolytes.

“Alcoholic or sugary beverages should be avoided, as they can promote dehydration. It’s prudent for young children not to participate, due to their greater vulnerability. Pets can also suffer burns from hot pavement or heat exhaustion,” said Yajaira Quesada, a doctor from the College of Pharmacists.

  • It is recommended that sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 50 or higher is applied at least half an hour before starting the walk and reapply it every two hours. It is also recommended to wear a hat, sunglasses, light clothing that covers your skin, and comfortable footwear.
  • It is also recommended to take rest breaks every one or two hours, carry personal identification and an emergency contact number, and avoid night walks or crowded environments, especially for children and animals.
  • It is advisable to prepare a first-aid kit with pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, anti-inflammatory gels, antidiarrheals, antihistamines, and basic medical supplies. However, it is strongly recommended not to self-medicate, especially for children, and to consult a professional before starting any treatment, according to ColFar.
  • For people with chronic illnesses such as diabetes or hypertension, it is recommended to consult a doctor before starting the trek and continue taking the prescribed medication.

Pharmacies will be available before and during the romeria to assist with medications, hydration, skin care, and special needs.
