Q COSTA RICA TRAVEL – Starting May 22, Costa Rica will have a new direct connection to the West Coast of the United States, thanks to a daily flight operated by United Airlines between San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO).
The inaugural flight will depart San Francisco at 11:34 pm (local time) and arrive in Costa Rica at 7:15 am. The following day, May 23, it will depart the San José airport at 8:45 am, bound for San Francisco, where it will land at 2:34 pm. The flight will be operated with a modern Boeing 737-MAX8 with a capacity for 166 passengers.
“This has been a priority route for years. It was the number one route not served directly from the United States. Every time we open a new direct connection, tourism to Costa Rica grows almost automatically,” said Erick Barboza, Director of Business Development at AERIS.

He also highlighted the value for Costa Ricans who will now be able to fly to San Francisco nonstop, and reaffirmed AERIS’s commitment to continue supporting United and the Costa Rican Tourism Board to keep the route profitable and provide a “pura vida” experience from the airport.
Connection to Asia and Greater Visibility for Costa Rica
The importance of the San Francisco hub for the airline, from which multiple daily flights to Asia operate, was underscored by Frederick Thome, Director of Sales for Central America and the Andean Region at United Airlines.
“With this new route, Costa Rica connects with Asia, Australia, and other regions with just one stop. We’re strategically putting the country on the global map,” he explained.
He also highlighted that the market response has been positive since the route was announced.
“The flight filled up quickly, demonstrating the great potential that existed. Costa Rica now has a direct connection from one of the most densely populated and technologically advanced regions in the United States,” he stated.
