Many of the migrants deported from US to Costa Rica have the ability to pay to leave the country

QCOSTARICA — Mario Zamora, Minister of Public Security, reported that the majority of migrants who arrived in Costa Rica deported from the United States in the past two weeks have the economic conditions to return to their countries of origin.

The official assured that many of them had businesses on U.S. soil, which is why they have the ability to pay for their plane tickets to leave the country.

“Some of them were even owners of supermarkets and stores, but they did not comply with the legal paperwork to remain in the United States, which is why they were detained by immigration authorities and deported,” he explained.

Zamora reiterated that a large part of these foreigners have indicated that they will return to their countries and have not reported their interest in requesting refuge in Costa Rica.

“Many have told us that they are in the economic capacity to pay for their return tickets to their country of origin, since they are family groups of economic migrants settled in U.S. territory,” he added.

Immigration and Foreign Affairs authorities report that the United States Government reviewed the police records of the foreigners and they did not represent any risk.

On the other hand, he indicated that a first group, a family from Armenia, has already left the Temporary Migrant Care Center (Catem), in the Southern Zone, in Paso Canoas near the Panama border, heading to San José to leave the country.

“They have already left Catem, they are in San José, they are in the process of boarding the flights that will take them to Armenia. It is a family made up of between three and five people,” he explained.

A total of 200 migrants from countries such as China, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Jordan and others arrived in Costa Rica during the last two weeks after an agreement with the United States Government.
