Nicaragua withdraws from UN Human Rights Council

Q24N — Daniel Ortega and his government made the decision to withdraw from the United Nations Human Rights Council after learning of a report in which they sued Nicaragua before the International Court of Justice for depriving Nicaraguans of their nationality.

“Nicaragua transmits its sovereign and irrevocable decision to withdraw from the Human Rights Council and from all activities related to this Council and all its satellite mechanisms,” said Rosario Murillo, Nicaragua’s co-president.

She added that her Government rejects all falsehoods, falsifications, slander, lies, in an act of elementary decency, fulfilling that sacred duty of preserving decorum and pride.

“We say that once again the Human Rights Council violates its own regulations contained in the resolution approved on March 15, 2006, in which the principles of objectivity, impartiality and non-selectivity in the examination of human rights issues were established, as well as the obligation to eliminate the application of double standards and politicization,” she said.

“For Nicaragua, these disrespectful mechanisms have lost their nature and decency. We do not recognize them and we do not see ourselves as being part of or complicit in violations against sovereignty, the equality of states, and the dignity of peoples. For this reason, Nicaragua transmits its sovereign and irrevocable decision to withdraw from the Human Rights Council and from all activities related to this Council and all its satellite mechanisms,” said Murillo.

So far, 452 Nicaraguans have been stripped of their nationality after a last action of this type last September, when 135 imprisoned opponents to the Ortega-Murillo regime were released from prison and expelled to Guatemala.

The United Nations Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body that promotes and protects human rights globally. It was established in 2006 and is based in Geneva, Switzerland
