Legislators end session in shouts and threats over bill for low-cost airfares in the region

QCOSTARICA — Legislators on Monday ended up shouting and threatening over the plan for cheap flights in Central America and the Dominican Republic.

The initiative, promoted by the legislator Eliécer Feinzaig, proposes that the cost to fly to any country in the region should not exceed US$100 (round trip) or, failing that, US$50 (one way).

In the case of the Dominican Republic, the fare would be US$120 (round trip), while a one-way ticket would cost US$60.

At present, the cost of flights within the region can be two to three times the usual proposed price or even more. For example, a return flight between San Jose, Costa Rica to Panama City, Panama, in economic, departing February 10 and returning February 17, is ¢150,070 colones (US$291 at today’s exchange rate).

However, the government assures that the proposal will be harmful to the local economy and tourism. It also accused the opposition of “benefiting elites.”

The opposition accused the ruling party of being “the image of corruption,” to which Pilar Cisneros, who heads the ruling party, accused the Frente Amplio (FA) and other factions of being “defenders of the castes” that harmed the country.

As the minutes went by, the tensions and adjectives increased. Some of those heard in the plenary session were: “liar, pathological, manipulative, corrupt, and third-rate economists,” among other slurs and barbs.

After 7:00 pm one of the most tense moments took place, when shouts and threats came to a head, forcing the day’s session to be adjourned. At one point, it almost came to face-to-face confrontations between several opposing legislators, calmed by cooler heads.

The bill will continue to be discussed in today’s (Tuesday) session.
