Costa Rican President foresees “transactional” relationship with Trump administration

QCOSTARICA — The President of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves, acknowledged this week the importance of getting along very well with allies and trading partners such as the United States, planning a “transactional” relationship with the government of Donald Trump.

At the weekly press conference on Wednesday, Chaves indicated that the “Costa Rican Government has an enormous closeness with the Government of the United States,” regardless of “the sympathies or lack of sympathy that there is or not,” referring to the leaders.

The Chaves administration (2022-2026) had a close collaboration with the Government of Democrat Joe Biden (2021-2025). The President said that he believes that Costa Rica will now work on a relationship with the Trump administration more focused on “specific transactional points” such as international trade, capital flows, and investment, instead of “more altruistic issues such as democracy.”

“President Trump is a very different person and as president, he will make the policies of his administration very different, as they already are, from the policies of the previous government. We recognize the importance of getting along very well with all our allies, such as the United States, and commercial partners,” said Chaves.

For his part, Costa Rica’s foreign minister, Arnoldo André Tinoco, explained that last December he visited Washington to approach elected Republican congressmen and senators and identify issues of common interest such as migration flows, the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking, among others.

“We believe that Costa Rica will be recognized by the new Trump administration as a friend of the United States and an ally in matters of democracy, freedom of expression and respect for human rights,” said the foreign minister.

André explained that “issues of common interest” have also been identified, such as migration flows, the fight against organized crime and the fight against drug trafficking.
