Q COSTA RICA — The Banco Central de Costa Rica (BCCR) – Central Bank, has already put into circulation a new ¢500 coin that celebrates the 200 years of the Annexation of the Nicoya Party.
This coin, presented to the public last July, began circulating on Monday, January 20, 2025.
Characteristics of the new coin

- Bimetallic design: The coin has a silver core of copper and nickel, surrounded by a gold ring of copper, zinc and nickel.
- Security: It features a latent image that changes between the value “500” and the initials “BCCR” when turned.
- Obverse: The design features elements commemorating the Annexation of the Nicoya Party, including the territory of the region, the outline of the province of Guanacaste, the Guanacaste Tree, a seal of the indigenous peoples of the North Pacific, and the image of a woman in traditional dress.
- Reverse: It includes the legends “200 years of the Annexation of the Nicoya Party 1824-2024” and the phrase “From the homeland by our will.”
- Part of the collection: This coin joins the “Hitos de nuestra historia” (Milestones of our history) collection, which includes other commemorative coins.
The old ¢500 coins with the previous design (the 33-millimeter gold piece) will lose its will stop circulating as of July 1, 2025, and lose its value as a means of payment.
From that date, the old coins must be exchanged or deposited at banks, gradually replaced by the new coin, with a diameter of 28 millimeters.
