“The Government’s speech is pachuco” says former president Luis Guillermo Solis

RICO’ Q — Though the official start of the 2026 elections campaign is many months off, don’t be fooled that the parties and potential candidates will wait for the start line to kick off their campaigns.

On Monday, former President Luis Guillermo Solís (2014-2018), stated on the radio program “Asiento Extra”  (92.3 FM) that both the tone and the discourse of the current Administration are full of violence and vulgarity.

Solís stressed that the discursive line of Casa Presidencial (Government House) is “loaded with violence and tension” exacerbated by a rhetoric full of “a lot of misinformation”, as well as “half-truths and lies”.

“It is a difficult year. Citizens must be very discerning because confusion is reigning in many fields,” said the former president, who said he was surprised by the management that President Rodrigo Chaves has had regarding the Powers of the State, the constitutionality, and the exercise of power.

“I do not believe that Costa Ricans are ordinary or violent people, who like quarrels and generating scandal. I do not believe that they have the discourse of bar fighters. The Government is poor, unsavory and ordinary.

“The way it has treated some legislators, how it disregards the opinion of its own ministers and mocks its political opponents. All of that is ordinary, vulgar! The presidential investiture has to be administered with great wisdom,” he asserted.

The former president specified that the Executive has an interest in harming some institutions without proposing alternatives.

Solís estimated that Chaves “takes the anger and rage of the common citizen” to “elevate it to a campaign of systemic crises.”

“We are not dead”

In the same radio program, the former president denied that the Partido Accion Cuidadana (PAC), a party that came out almost from nowhere and formed two consecutive governments (2014-2022), “is dead,” as various political actors have assured.

“(…) I have seen many dead people who are in very good health. The PAC is not dead, that is, we are honoring the payment of the sentences that the party suffered, we are present in the polls with small numbers,” he said.

Although he acknowledged that the public accused the group of “mistakes” by the two red-and-yellow administrations, he stressed that many of the works and fiscal measures enjoyed by the current government come precisely from the PAC.
