QCOSTARICA — A legislative bill making its way through Costa Rica’s Legislative Assembly could see the creation of more long weekends with the transfer of holidays, similar to the law approved to compensate for the impact generated by the pandemic on the tourism sector.
For 2025, there is no transfer of holidays, as confirmed by the Ministry of Labor; however, that could change if the legislative bill presented by Monserrat Ruiz of the Partido Liberacion Nacional (PLN) is approved.
The initiative, which has already been ruled positively in the Legislative Commission on Tourism is waiting to be scheduled in the Plenary, although at this time extraordinary sessions need to be called by the Executive Branch.

The project aims to definitively move the enjoyment of the holidays of April 11, May 1 and December 1 to the previous or subsequent Monday.
It was also intended to move July 25, Nicoya Annexation Day; however, the legislators of the commission determined that due to a matter of tradition, it was better not to touch it.
“It is to give continuity to something that had already been approved, especially in the time of the pandemic, to give space to national tourism,” said Carolina Delgado, president of the Tourism Commission.
The transfer would occur in the following way: if the date falls on Tuesday or Wednesday, it will be moved to the previous Monday and if it falls on Thursday, it will be celebrated on the following Monday.
If the legislation is approved in Congress, the change is not only for 2025, it will continue to occur over the years.
For 2025, all mandatory paid holidays fall on weekdays:
