QCOSTARICA – In a few weeks, starting on January 1, 2025, platforms such as Uber and AirBnb, will be gathering additional information from their partners, people who make a few extra bucks by renting out spaces in their homes, giving strangers rides in their car or create online content for paid subscribers, among others, to share with the Ministry of Finance.
A popular belief is that earnings from platforms such as Uber, Airbnb, and other online services may not be considered as income.
As confirmed by Rudolf Lücke, Deputy Minister of Taxation, the idea is that companies such as Airbnb, Uber, and OnlyFans, among others, collect this information throughout the year and from 2026 deliver it to Taxation so that it can share it with the member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

“The platforms must report detailed information about themselves with respect to the sellers or those who offer the services, such as rental of goods, personal services or content creation.
“They must detail the total identification information, the transactions carried out and in the case of real estate rentals include information such as the address of the property or some information from the Public Registry,” explained Lücke.
This, taxing incoming from digital platforms, in particular UBER, may not go down well for many given that Uber in Costa Rica is not technically 100% legal. Since 2015, UBER has been available in Costa Rica through a de facto legal framework with government taxation, requiring drivers to register as independent workers with the Caja, have insurance to protect passengers, and pay income tax.
Airbnb operations are permitted in Costa Rica, but rental owners are required to adhere to certain regulations, including the payment of taxes such as income tax and the value-added tax (IVA).
The objective of taxation is to establish fairness and equality between gig economy services and conventional accommodation and transportation providers.
