QCOSTARICA — Walking from the west side of downtown San Jose to the other side, along Avenida Central, some 2 kilometers, you will come across at least three McDonald’s. If you tour the side streets, not more than a block or two in each direction, there are a few more.
These are part of the 76 locations McDonald’s has in Costa Rica, the majority being in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM).
Arcos Dorados (Golden Arches) is the master franchise of the fast food restaurant chain McDonald’s brand in Costa Rica and 19 other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (Argentina, Aruba, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Curaçao, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, St. Croix, St. Thomas, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and Venezuela).

McDonald’s first arrived in Costa Rica in 1970, expanding its presence across the region, after opening its first restaurant in Puerto Rico in 1967. The company followed up with the opening in Panama in 1971, Brazil in 1979, Mexico and Venezuela in 1985, and Argentina in 1986, becoming the largest fast-food chain in the region and is more than three times the size of its closest competitor.
In Costa Rica, more than 2,500 people work for the company nationwide and reaffirming the company’s commitment as a driver of youth employment in the country, providing job opportunities, training, and growth. For many, this represents their first experience of formal employment.
McDonald’s number 76 is located in Santa Bárbara, in Heredia, one of 11 locations in the province (Heredia Plaza, Real Cariari, Heredia Centro, Paseo de las Flores, San Francisco, Valencia, Belén, Santo Domingo, Barva, and Mall Oxígeno).
Santa Bárbara is one of three McDonald’s restaurants ( the others Coyol and Guápiles) the company opened in 2024, generating 118 new jobs and reaffirming its expansion plan in Costa Rica.
