QCOSTARICA — Sarapiquí, in the northern part of Costa Rica, is one of the places hardest hit by the heavy rains of the last few hours.
Just like in Guanacaste a few weeks ago, flooding of the area has affected many families who had to leave their homes and go to a shelter.
On Tuesday, the Cruz Roja Costarricense (Costa Rican Red Cross) reported that 42 people: 19 children, 20 adults and 3 seniors from La Cureña, were evacuated. They were taken to the Ágape Church shelter, where they will be cared for by emergency personnel.

“The situation is tough, especially because not a single car can pass through,” said Minerva Espinoza, one of those affected, who also said that to get home she can only travel by boat.
And it was the members of the Bomberos (Fire Department), using their boats, to successfully moved the trapped in the floods to to safety.
Other communities that have been under constant rain are La Virgen, Puerto Viejo, Horquetas, and Río Frío.
This Wednesday morning, once again the Ruta 32 (San José to Limon), from Heredia to Guapiles was closed due to landslides, mainly in the areas of the Zurqui of the Braulio Carrillo National Park.

The queue of truckers from the closure point in Heredia extended for more than two kilometers. The Vara Blanca alternate, only light vehicles, is not viable due to the floodings in Sarapiquí. The Ruta 10 through Turrialba to Siquirries, which had been closed on Tuesday, is open this morning, but due to strong winds and rain in the area, the MOPT may announce a preventive closure at any time. This would leave the Bajos de Chilamate – Vuelta Kooper.
