CCSS specialist doctors in mass resignations

QCOSTARIAC — The board of directors of the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS or Caja) declared a state of emergency following the massive resignation of specialists, effective from December 3, 2024, to June 3, 2025, with the possibility of extension.

Currently, 84 specialist doctors in fields such as Anesthesiology, Radiology, Ophthalmology and Gynecology-Obstetrics have resigned, with more expected to resign in the coming months, as more resignations are being received from specialists, according to the director of the Emergency and Disaster Care Center (CAED), Mario Vílchez.

Vílchez added that Hospital Mexico, one of three major CCSS hospitals in the San José, being one of the most affected.

Vílchez also warned that the emergency will not only last for a month. “We have projected resignations until the month of March. This is not an emergency that will last a month or four weeks, but rather can be sustained over time,” he said.

The decision was made during a regular session on Tuesday to ensure the Caja has necessary resources for emergency care.
