QCOSTARICA — As if you haven’t noticed, the rains just won’t quit. It’s been raining almost night and day since Saturday evening throughout most of the country.
The areas worst hit are Guanacaste, the southern zone, and several areas of the Central Valley.
The Ministerio de Obras Publicas y Transportes (MOPT) – in an unprecedented and surprising – preventive action, has ordered the total or partial closure of several main routes, as well as many regional and cantonal roads.

The most important of these closures are:
- Ruta 1 (Interamericana Norte) in the area of Cambronero (west of San Ramon)
- Ruta 2 (Interamericana Sur) in particular in the area of Cerro de la Muerte.
- Ruta 32 – Carretera Braulio Carrillo more commonly known as the Zurquí road (basically from Heredia to Rio Frio, north of Guapiles).
The closures on these roads is from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am. Important to note that the morning re-opening will occur only after MOPT crews have inspected the section of road to ensure it is safe to transit.
More rain is expected in the coming days.
This is the official weather forecast by the national weather service, the Instituto Meteorológico Nacional (IMN) – for Tuesday, November 12, 2024:
For this Tuesday, the Intertropical Convergence Zone will continue near the country, in addition to a high humidity content in the atmosphere. However, the high altitude trough that was affecting the country in previous days has already receded and weakened, so it no longer has any influence on the country.
This will cause the rains to be less intense and persistent than in previous days. Even so, it is important to remember that the soils continue to be very saturated, so the vulnerability to incidents remains high and we must not let our guard down. During the early morning and part of the morning, cloudy skies with scattered rains are expected for the Pacific regions. Part of this activity can reach the west and north of the Central Valley in the form of drizzle.

In the rest of the country, partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected. In the afternoon, isolated showers with storms are expected in the Pacific regions, Central Valley and mountainous areas of the rest of the country. The rains may extend into the early hours of the night.
If you are to be on the roads, take the necessary measures for a safe ride. If on or about your barrio, an umbrella, rainwear and galoshes will keep you dry!
