Trump’s immigration policy will cause a surge in migrant waves on the border with Mexico

Q24N (EFE) The harsh immigration policy of Donald Trump, who won the US presidential election on Tuesday, in which he has stigmatized migrants, will cause an increase in the flow of migrants on the northern border of Mexico, activists and migrants said.

“It is possible that there will be a stagnation of migrants in Ciudad Juárez, as has happened on other occasions,” said Francisco Segovia, director of the Gracia Border shelter.

He recalled that in the United States Government “it takes a long time to authorize the passage of a migrant and that is mainly what worries us, that the wave of migrants will grow, the flow of migrants arriving at the border,” he said.

Segovia recalled that Trump’s speech has been openly anti-immigrant since his previous term (2017-2021) and now it will not be different and possibly even harsher.

“We already know that Trump is the chosen one, now we have to wait to see how the situation moves here among migrants at the border,” said Segovia.

Trump declared himself the winner of the elections in the United States on Wednesday and the Republican will return to the White House after a close electoral campaign in which he surpassed the 270 electoral votes necessary to become the 47th president in the history of the country.

Among migrants, they see Trump as a figure who represents strict immigration policies and an uncertain future for those seeking to cross the border.

Although the United States Department of Homeland Security has said that the country’s immigration laws remain strict and that there will be no immediate change in immigration laws after the US elections, migrants were seen crossing international bridges on Wednesday with fear that with the arrival of Donald Trump they would be turned back, even having their CPB ONE appointment.

“We had the dream that the other person (Kamala Harris) who was fighting with Trump for the Presidency of the United States was going to win and now we are afraid; We know that if there are opportunities to enter, then it is better to do things right and wait for what he says,” said José Eduardo Castañeda Méndez, originally from El Salvador.

For migrants on the northern border of Mexico, Trump’s return to the presidency is a possibility that revives memories of obstacles and separations and, faced with a panorama of uncertainty, many seek strength in the community and local organizations, determined to wait until the last moment to find out what their future will be.

Last Monday, during a closing campaign rally, Trump directly threatened Sheinbaum with the imposition of a 25% tariff on exports, if the country does not stop the “avalanche of criminals and drugs entering the US.”

On Tuesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted a 75% decrease in the number of migrants arriving at the border with the United States, in response to Trump’s warning, whom she congratulated for his victory at the polls.
