New scam alerted about alleged package delivery

RICO’s Q — A new scam about an alleged package delivery is attempting to trick people into clicking on a link about a supposed difficulty in delivering your package at the Correos de Costa Rica (Post Office).

The messages arrive via text messages to the potential victim’s cell phone (SMS and WhatsApp), in which, through very persuasive working, they urge the intended victim (you) to click on the link to verify the status of the shipment, complete the delivery address or payment information.

“Your package will be lost,” or “Delivery will be suspended because data is missing” or “Your package will be returned to sender”, are some of the phrases to get your attention and curiosity.

The intensity of the scam increases at this of the year when many people buy products from abroad for Black Friday and Christmas season offers.

Daniela Gutiérrez, an economist at the Asociación Bancaria Costarricense (ABC) – Costa Rican Banking Association, comments that if you have not made any online purchases or managed shipments through Correos de Costa Rica, you should not respond or much less click on the links, as it is surely a fake platform that tries to imitate Correos.

This is an SMS text message about a non-payment for a traffic violation. Like the first one, this is a scam as well. This was also received in the last couple of weeks.

“We recommend that you always check with the official provider before making any payment or giving personal information. Staying alert and careful with your data is key to protecting your financial security,” explained Gutiérrez.

“The Asociación Bancaria Costarricense remains committed to educating and protecting consumers, especially in these types of fraudulent practices. If you have any doubts about the authenticity of a message or email, contact the official entity to confirm,” she added.

For her part, Carla González, spokesperson for Correos de Costa Rica, explained that all the information required for the delivery of a package is obtained from the moment the sender processes the shipment.

“When there is a package in the process of delivery and the courier has any doubts regarding the address indicated, not Correos will contact the recipient at that very moment to confirm the location; sensitive information will never be requested through a link,” she clarified.

ABC and Correos de Costa Rica remind us that, if a person is waiting for a package, they should track it only through the official platform on the Correos website. And that Correos de Costa Rica will never ask via text message to update personal data, banking information or any other type of information, much less to make any additional payment.

The notifications that the company sends via SMS are informative and will always include the shipping number of the package in transit.

DO NOT CLICK ON ANY LINK OR REPLY TO ANY SUSPICIOUS MESSAGE!
