QCOSTARICA — The Instituto Meteorológico Nacional de Costa Rica (IMN) – national weather service, on Wednesday, issued a weather alert for the northern zone for the indirect influence of Hurricane Rafael, located WNW of Havana, Cuba, maintains sustained winds of 170 km/h, and is moving northwest towards the Gulf of Mexico.
The alert indicates a decrease in the flow of humidity induced by Rafael over the Costa Rican Pacific was perceived Wednesday afternoon, with rainfall ranges from 20 to 40 mm in Guanacaste, between 30 to 50 mm in the Central and South Pacific, as well as in the east of the Central Valley, and finally, between 5 to 45 mm in the North Zone and mountains of the Caribbean.
The IMN forecasts intermittent rains from weak to moderate intensity are expected this Thursday morning in the North Pacific. The estimated amounts would be between 10 – 60 mm. Lesser amounts in the rest of the Pacific with isolated showers. For the Central Valley and mountains of the Caribbean there will be light rains in the first hours and possible fog banks. According to the latest IMN analyses, this Thursday, the country will be leaving the influence of Hurricane Rafael. However, atmospheric conditions after the passage of this tropical cyclone will remain unstable, causing the Intertropical Convergence Zone to be active and positioned towards the north of the country. Therefore, variable cloudiness is expected in the morning in the North Pacific, especially in the area close to the border with Nicaragua, where rain could persist.
The Central Valley is expected to have light to partial cloudiness and the Caribbean and Northern Zone regions with light cloudiness. In the afternoon, isolated but heavy rains and showers are expected in the mountains of the Pacific, the Central Valley, in the mountainous area and surrounding areas of the Caribbean and low parts of the Northern Zone. The rains may extend during the night in the Pacific regions, especially in the North Pacific and Central Pacific
Warning: Soil saturation with extremely high percentages remains in both Peninsulas, the entire North Pacific, mountains of the South Pacific, North Zone, Central Pacific and Central Valley, so it is recommended to take extreme measures since they are highly vulnerable to incidents.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
- Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
