San José is the 6th best city to live in Latin America

QCOSTARICA — Costa Rica’s capital city, San José, ranks among the best cities to live in Latin America, according to the Global Liveability Index 2024 published by The Economist earlier this year.

The ranking evaluates 173 cities around the world in five categories:

1. Stability: This category measures safety in the city through indicators of minor and violent crime, as well as threats of terrorism, military conflict or civil unrest.

  1. Health: It evaluates the availability and quality of private and public health care, access to over-the-counter medicines and other general health indicators.

  2. Culture and Environment: It considers the climate, levels of corruption, social or religious restrictions, censorship, and the availability of cultural activities, sports, food and consumer goods.

  3. Education: It analyzes the availability and quality of private education, as well as general indicators of public education.

  4. Infrastructure: It includes the quality of the road network, public transport, international connections, availability of quality housing, energy supply, water and telecommunications.

Based on these indicators, the habitability of each city is calculated on a scale of 0 to 100, with 100 being the score with the most favorable conditions for living.

With an average of 73.6, San José obtained sixth place, above other cities such as Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), and Bogotá (Colombia).

Buenos Aires (Argentina), Montevideo (Uruguay), and Santiago (Chile) lead the ranking, exceeding 80 points.
