QCOSTARICA — After a prolonged period of decline, RadioShack, the American electronics retailer, established in 1921 as an amateur radio mail-order business, declared bankruptcy under Chapter 11 in 2015.
Not long after, Unicomer of El Salvador paid US$5 million for the exclusive rights to the RadioShack brand in Central and South America, and the Caribbean. In 2023, the company secured exclusive rights in another 70 countries, including the United States and Canada.
In Costa Rica, the brand has been part of the Unicomer/Gollo Group since 2022.

As part of RadioShack’s development plan, in the last months of 2023 and this, RadioShack has opened stores in San José, Puntarenas, Liberia, Cartago, Limón and Guápiles.
As part of its growth strategy for 2024, the newest addition is a new store, this time in Mall Oxígeno, in Heredia, with an investment of more than US$200,000 dollars.
The brand has 18 stores across the country with plans to open additional locations in 2025.
“The decision to open RadioShack in Mall Oxígeno responds to the strategic location of the shopping center that has a high traffic of visitors and is a reference in the province of Heredia. The brand seeks to be closer to customers and provide a unique experience in technology and electronics in a place with a lot of traffic,” said Eduardo Córdoba, Marketing and Customer Manager of Grupo Unicomer/Gollo.
The store has an approximate area of 120 m2 (1,300 square feet), which allows it to offer a wide range of technological products and a comfortable space for customers.
