15 Months prison for killing ‘Canelo’

QCOSTARICA — The Servicio Nacional de Salud Animal (Senasa) – National Animal Health Service – was successful in obtaining a conviction of one year and three months in prison in the case of animal cruelty that affected the dog known as ‘Canelo’.

“The decision, issued on October 1 by the Criminal Court of the Third Judicial Circuit of San Ramón, was confirmed on October 23, setting an important precedent in the fight against animal abuse in Costa Rica,” Senasa said.

The sentence, identified as No. 129 -TJSR-2024, includes a sentence with the benefit of conditional execution (probation) for three years.

During this time, the defendant must maintain a stable address, refrain from committing crimes, and not carry weapons of any kind. Since May 15, 2024, after the cruel murder of Canelo, the suspect has been in preventive detention (remand).

“Canelo was a dog that resided in the central park of San Ramón and had won the affection of the local community. His tragic death, which occurred on May 15, generated strong rejection and social mobilization in defense of animal rights,” Senasa said in a statement.

Senasa and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) have reiterated their commitment to protect animal rights in Costa Rica.

“This court ruling is presented as a reminder that acts of cruelty or animal abuse will not be tolerated. The sentence is a significant step towards the recognition of the dignity and respect that all living beings deserve,” authorities emphasize.

Society is also called upon to understand the importance of treating animals with respect and consideration.
