QCOSTARICA — Licensed drivers who are caught for not having their driver’s license in their possession would not face any fines if a bill is approved in the Legislative Assembly.
The bill was approved in first reading and is not waiting second and final reading would be spared the ¢25,000 colones fine which is currently in the law books.
This does not mean that a person without a driver’s license can drive with impunity, but that a driver, duly licensed, cannot be punished for not having the document on them if stopped by a traffic official.

The reform to the traffic law also seeks an extension for foreigners (tourists) with valid driver’s licenses, not for a specific period of 3 months, but for the period of legal permission in the country, which was extended up to six months for many visitors, depending on their country of origin.
The bill is expected to pass without foreseen events in the coming days and would be in force once it receives the signature of the president and published in official newsletter L a Gaceta.
