QCOSTARICA — Rhinovirus displaced COVID-19 and is now the respiratory virus that circulates the most in Costa Rica, as revealed in the latest epidemiological bulletin prepared by the Ministry of Health.
According to the report, this infection – which causes the common cold – is followed by COVID-19 and the Respiratory Syncytial Virus.
Up to epidemiological week 34 (which covers August 18-24, 2024) the country reported a total of 7,262 cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI), 870,376 of Upper Acute Respiratory Infections (IRAS), and 15,504 of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI).

As to COVID-19, up to epidemiological week 35 (which covers August 25-31, 2024) there were 99 confirmed cases, representing a decrease of 37.73% compared to the previous period, a trend in the last six weeks, in which a reduction of 78.62% has been reported.
In epidemiological week 35, 85 hospitalizations were reported for COVID-19, meaning a reduction of 17.47% compared to the previous seven days.
Finally, regarding deaths associated with COVID-19, there were eight deaths in week 35; that is, the same number of deaths reported the previous week.
Last week, health authorities reported that 36 minors have died so far this year from respiratory viruses, with rhinovirus and enterovirus causing the majority of these deaths.
There is currently a campaign to expand COVID-19 vaccination coverage and thus minimize complications and hospitalizations associated with this disease.
