The La Amistad Bridge is Back in Business! – The Costa Rican Times

Get ready for smoother travels, folks! After three months of dedicated work and in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the annexation of Nicoya, the government has officially reopened the La Amistad Bridge over the Tempisque River. This restoration marks a significant milestone for the thousands of residents in Guanacaste who rely on this crucial infrastructure.

A Long-Awaited Reopening

After 20 years of wear and tear, compounded by significant damage from the 2012 earthquake, the La Amistad Bridge is back in action. Stretching 780 meters, this essential link between Guanacaste and the rest of Costa Rica has been restored to its former glory. Authorities assure that the specialized rehabilitation works ensure the bridge’s effectiveness, efficiency, and transparency.

Celebrating a Milestone

The grand reopening of the bridge was a major highlight of the celebration tour for the Bicentennial of the Annexation of Nicoya. President Rodrigo Chaves and the Minister of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT), Mauricio Batalla, were on hand to commemorate this momentous occasion.

What Did the Rehabilitation Entail?

The extensive rehabilitation works included:

  • Lifting the Structure: The bridge was elevated by 2 cm to replace the damaged supports and install new ones with enhanced anti-seismic capabilities.
  • New Expansion Joints: Essential for maintaining the integrity and flexibility of the bridge.
  • Lighting and Resurfacing: Improved visibility and a smoother driving experience.
  • Road Marking: Thermoplastic paint was used for durable and clear road markings.

These efforts were led by CONAVI’s engineering team and executed by the Costa Rican company Estrumet Metalmecánica. The project cost ¢1,365 million (approximately $2.56 million USD), with an additional ¢135 million (approximately $253,500 USD) allocated for resurfacing and signaling.

Minister Batalla’s Gratitude

Minister Batalla expressed heartfelt thanks to all entities and workers involved in this complex project. He highlighted their commitment and dedication, which ensured the project was completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

“This celebration marks 200 years since the Annexation, a perfect occasion to demonstrate that Costa Rica can complete public works efficiently and effectively, benefiting thousands of citizens and contributing to the sustainable development of our nation,” said Batalla.

A Boon for Local Mobility

The reopening of La Amistad Bridge is a game-changer for the locals. Gone are the days of crossing the Tempisque River by boat or enduring long trips by bus, car, or motorcycle. This bridge significantly enhances connectivity and mobility in the region, making daily commutes and travel much more manageable.

Looking Forward

This successful project is a testament to what can be achieved when dedication, skill, and proper planning come together. It sets a precedent for future infrastructure projects across Costa Rica, proving that with the right approach, even the most challenging tasks can be accomplished effectively.

The reopening of the La Amistad Bridge is more than just an infrastructural achievement; it’s a symbol of progress and a promise of better connectivity for Guanacaste residents. As we celebrate this milestone, let’s look forward to the continued development and enhancement of our nation’s infrastructure, paving the way for a brighter, more connected future.
