Costa Rica under “Green Alert” due to tropical wave #20

QCOSTARICA — The passage of tropical wave #20 is expected to enter the national territory this Friday morning.

As a preventive measure, the Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) – National Emergency Commission – placed the entire country under a ‘green alert’.

Another factor that also influenced the decision is that the Intertropical Convergence Zone is already positioned on national soil.

Given this combination of factors, the Instituto Meteorológico Nacional (IMN) – national weather service –  predicts rains of different intensities in the Northern Zone, mountainous sectors of the Northern Caribbean, Pacific and Central Valley.

For its part, in the South Pacific, Central Pacific and the Gulf of Nicoya are expected to be most affected with heavy downpours.

Under a ‘green alert‘, people are asked to be attentive to the possible impact of a change in weather conditions. A ‘yellow alert‘ indicates that the population must be prepared for the event and move to a safe place if they are in a risk area, while a ‘red alert‘ is for areas exposed to greater danger.
