CORBANA joins Latam’s request for a fair price for bananas in international markets

QCOSTARICA — In various forums, Corporación Bananera Nacional (CORBANA) – Costa Rica’s Banana Corporation – has been asking European supermarkets for concrete actions for the sustainability of the banana sector.

CORBANA has made this call directly to supermarkets, and recently at the FAO World Banana Forum a space for discussion on this topic was created and a commission was created to seek a more equitable distribution of the distribution chain, in which producers participate, marketing companies, government entities, non-governmental organizations and supermarkets.

“Our message and requirement at the IV Global Conference of the World Banana Forum, which took place in March 2024, was a fair price and more equitable distribution in the value chain,” said CORBANA in a statement.

CORBANA supports the efforts and actions that organizations from banana exporting countries in Latin America have carried out and are carrying out, to seek a fair price, in accordance with the requirements demanded by supermarkets, recognizing the characteristics, conditions and standards of each country and its cost structure.

“Hundreds of thousands of families throughout Latin America depend on the activity and export of bananas. Their sustainability is of utmost importance for areas that do not have employment options, which is why we are requesting an attitude of shared responsibility, which allows for equitable distribution. throughout the supply chain, and that it is not the producers who assume the entire burden,” explained Jorge Sauma Aguilar, General Manager of CORBANA.

The international press reports on the increase that supermarkets have made on a large number of products due to the global problem, but we see that bananas continue to be the lowest priced in the fruit category, which is why we request a price adjustment, indicated Sauma.

Costa Rican bananas are the best in the world because they are produced in compliance with sustainable social and environmental policies. The country pays the best salaries in the agricultural sector, banana production is certified because it is done under high standards of environmental protection. 100% of the banana farms in our country have environmental and social certifications.

We want to maintain these standards and that is why we consider the request made by the organizations of banana-producing countries to be fair.
