Students return to classes in Honduras

Q24N — Thousands of Honduran students returned to school on Monday after a temporary closure due to improved air quality.

The Ministry of Education announced the reopening of educational centers but with restrictions on outdoor activities in areas with poor air quality.

The air quality index in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula remains at harmful levels due to pollution.

The Ministry of Education also adjusted the school calendar due to the toxic pollution and heat wave. Public employees in Tegucigalpa have returned to their offices after working from home to reduce vehicle emissions.

The National Autonomous University of Honduras has resumed normal activities after postponing classes due to pollution.

The decrease in air pollution has allowed airports to remain operational.

Forest fires, burning of solid waste, and construction dust contribute to the pollution. Honduras has experienced a high number of fires this year, affecting hectares of forests and vegetation.

High temperatures, agricultural burning, and human activity are major factors in causing forest fires.
