QCOSTARICA — This weekend weekend we got some rain. This is good news. The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) – the state-owned power and light company, stated that the rain was enough to increase the water levels in certain reservoirs.
As a result, the scheduled electricity rationing blackouts (suspensiones in Spanish) have been postponed until Tuesday, May 14th.
The truth, however, is that after the 2007 nationwide blackout, the regulatory authority, the Autoridad Reguladoa de Servicios Publicos (Aresep) established a protocol requiring ICE to give the public at least five days notice before any scheduled power outages.

Thus, according to the protocol, electricity rationing, called “suspensiones” by ICE, will start tomorrow, Tuesday, May 14, which is only four days after the announcement made on Thursday.
ICE says the electricity interruptions due to rationing will not exceed 3 hours per day. The hour and time of the of the suspensiones are up to each of the eight electricity providers in the country, including ICE’s Compañia de Fuerza y Luz (CFNL).
