QCOSTARICA — The Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica (Ovsicori) – Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica – said that the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, a very active volcano, prone to large eruptions, is likely to erupt in the “quite near future.”
This is according to a report by Geoffroy Avord, an Ovsicori volcanologist, who explained that there are analyses that determine this type of behavior related to volcanic activity.
According to Avord, at this time there is a trend towards an increase as a result of the volcanic activity that has been generated in recent months.

“The Rincón de la Vieja Volcano is still very active. While it does not present many manifestations, the outgassing remains stable and dense; and what we have is a significant deformation in recent months, as well as due to seismic activity, is still increasing,” said the expert.
The Rincón de la Vieja Volcano is one of the most active massifs in Costa Rica and recently experienced a sudden rise in seismic activity.
The Rincón de La Vieja is a complex stratovolcano located in the northwest of the country, in the canton of Liberia in the province of Guanacaste, 23 km NNE of the city of Liberia, standing a height of 1,895 meters above sea level, with an area between 100 and 130 squared kilometers.
The volcano is part of the Rincón de la Vieja national park. The first reference to eruptions in records during the colonial era appears in 1765 in the Archives of the Naval Museum of Spain. In 1844 there is mention of a series of “extraordinary and constant” eruptions that illuminated Lake Nicaragua, attributed to Rincón de la Vieja.
