QCOSTARICA — The Ministerio de Salud (Ministry of Health) is investigating a possible outbreak of Bordetella pertusis (Whooping Cough – Toseferina in Spanish) in San José, specifically in the canton of Tibás.
The investigation began on Tuesday, April 2, when a 16-year-old patient was being treated for an Influenza-type illness. On Friday, a Laboratory report Whooping Cough.
What is Whooping Cough?
Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a very contagious respiratory illness caused by a type of bacteria called Bordetella pertussis. The disease is only found in humans. Whooping cough bacteria attach to the cilia (tiny, hair-like extensions) that line part of the upper respiratory system.

Bordella Pertussis, preventable by vaccination, it can affect the population of any age, but mainly with greater severity in the unvaccinated population and in children.
It especially affects the respiratory tract, causing attacks of severe cough, fever, nasal congestion, apnea and other symptoms; Its transmission is through secretions when the sick person coughs or sneezes.
Doctors generally treat whooping cough with antibiotics. There are several antibiotics available to treat whooping cough. It’s very important to treat whooping cough early, before coughing fits begin. Starting treatment after three weeks of illness is unlikely to help even though most people will still have symptoms.
