RICO’s Q – Have you ever thought about how illegal drugs are able to enter and exit Costa Rica without being detected? One potential explanation could be the existence of hidden landing strips or airfields in secluded regions of the country.
The most recent is that authorities are still investigating whether the airstrip and two planes found in a remote area of Puerto Jimenéz, in the southern region, were involved in drug trafficking.
Eric Lacayo, Vice Minister of Public Security, highlighted that during an anti-drug trafficking operation in the southern area, authorities were able to track an aircraft, leading them to the location of a clandestine runway.

After finding the aircraft, police dogs confirmed traces of drugs in them.
Confiscated along with the plane were a livestock truck and three cell phones.
Last week, judicial authorities from Costa Rica and Panama met to plan coordinated efforts against organized crime in the border region.
