Maximum prison sentence in Costa Rica is 50 years

QCOSTARICA — The Limón Criminal Court issued a severe judgment on Monday, convicting four individuals for the murder of multiple individuals on a farm in Matama.

They were each given a 245-year prison sentence, but they will only serve a maximum of 50 years.

This, the maximum prison sentence, is established in Article 51 of the Penal Code, which states the following about prison sentences:

“The prison sentence and security measures will be carried out in the places and in the manner determined by a special law, so that they exercise rehabilitative action on the convicted person. Its maximum limit is fifty years (As amended by article 1 of law No. 7389 of April 22, 1994).”

In the recent incident in the Limóm province, four individuals were found guilty: three Venezuelans, along with a Limón resident who worked as a pirate taxi driver. The details of the incident were disturbing.

The events occurred at the Los Pinto farm, La Bomba, Limon, on the morning of March 2, 2022, when six of the victims were traveling by car along an internal road of the farm, intercepted by the four convicted, who, with heavy-caliber weapons and dressed as OIJ (judicial police) agents, short their victims in the head, killing them.

Nearby were some laborers doing construction work; The assailants shot at them multiple times, managing to kill one person.
