QCOSTARICA — Within the framework of the commemoration of World Health Organization (WHO) World Obesity Day, on March 4, the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) – Costa Rican Social Security Fund – also known as the “Caja”, reported on Friday a 38% increase in hospital discharges between 2022 and 2023 due to obesity
According to data from the CCSS Health Statistical Area, in 2022 the institution authorized the hospital discharge of 343 people who suffered from obesity, while in the last year that number reached 473 people.
In 2023, the largest number of these discharges (347) occurred in women between 45 and 64 years old, while 126 men between 20 and 44 years old, in a greater proportion, were discharged from CCSS hospitals due to obesity during the same period.

In the Outpatient Consultation services, a total of 398,153 people were treated for obesity the previous year, with the number of women also predominating with a record of 270,007 cases, compared to 128,139 men.
According to the CCSS Cardiovascular Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (2018), which analyzed this condition within the indicators, one in three adults was obese.
The population group with the highest percentage of obesity was found between 40 and 59 years of life, where it was documented that four out of ten women were obese compared to three out of ten men.
“This cardiovascular and health risk factor in general is of special relevance, due to the harmful effects on health that have been shown to be present in the following years since the presence of obesity and that, in many cases, has the characteristic of generating irreversible damage or diseases,” said Roy Wong, from the Epidemiological Surveillance subarea of the CCSS.
He added that although obesity is a condition of multiple health conditions, its prevention or care constitutes an effective measure to reduce the risk of future diseases, together with an adequate approach to building a healthy future.
The Caja also called on the user population that is referred to the CCSS Nutrition services not to miss their appointments and participate in the nutritional group consultation.
