QCOSTARICA — Only 3 out of every 10 Costa Ricans of voting age voted in the Municipal Elections held on Sunday, February 4, for the 2024-2028 period.
According to the first preliminary results of the Supreme Election Tribunal (TSE), abstentionism reached 68.23%, an increase from 63.7% compared to the results four years ago.

The canton (city) of San José led abstentionism, reaching over 72%, more than any of the 84 cantons. Including the canton of Liberia that led with the lowest abstentionism in elections, in 2024 more voters decided not to cast their votes.
This is an increase compared to the result four years ago (63.7%).
The municipal elections in Costa Rica were held on Sunday, February 4, 2024, for the 2024-2028 period, which registered 68.23% abstention.
“The reasons why there is sometimes greater or lesser abstentionism in an election are multi-causal, there is no single reason, so that it is after the process that we will be able to evaluate with greater certainty, in greater depth and based on the,” said Eugenia Zamora, president of the TSE.
The 2024 municipal elections are the fifth of the last six since 2002, the year with the worst record when apathy stood at 77.2%. The preliminary results of Sunday’s election as reported by the TSE indicate the winners of the major cantons in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) were:
- San José: Diego Miranda, 33, Juntos por San José
- Escazú: Orlando Esteban Umaña, 49, PNG
- Santa Ana: Juan José Vargas Falla, 64, Unidad
- Alajuela: Roberto Thompson Chacón, 63, PLN
- Grecia: Donald Quesada Rodríaguez, 53, UP
- Atenas: Máximo Chaves Ovares, 65, PPSD
- Cartago: Mario Redondo Poveda, 61, Actuemos Ya
- Heredia: Ángela Ileana Aguilar Vargas, 55, PLN
